CASSAS, LOUIS FRANCOIS: View of Diocletian's Aqueduct near Solin

Inventory number 316
Original title: Vue de l'aqueduc de Diocletien pres de Solin
Publishing year: 1802
Place of publishing and publisher: Paris
Format: 27,5 x 42,9 cm
Technique: Copper engraving

The view shows the remnants of Roman aqueduct in Solin and was published in Cassas’s and Lavallee’s monograph "Voyage pittoresque et historique de l'Istrie et de la Dalmatie". Such scenes of the remnants of Roman culture were particularly popular in the period of classicism.  The monograph, along with the writings by Fortis, Spon and Wheler, greatly contributed to the cultural aspect of equalizing Istria and Dalmatia with Italy and Greece. There are two human figures appearing in the view to appreciate the grandeur of the aqueduct. It is interesting to note that the view was engraved by "citizen" Levee, one of the few female copper engravers.
