This Biermann’s town view showing the town of Pula with its recognizable monument dating back to the Antiquity – Amphitheatre, is less unrealistic than the other views of Istrian and Dalmatian towns enclosed to the graphic map issued in 1875 by Lloyd insurance company. In the foreground, a Roman amphitheatre is shown and next to it the contours of the town of Pula can be seen. Foreground is illustrated with a smaller merchant ship and a fisherman boat. A few other ships can be seen on the sea. This view of Pula by Biermann was closely copied from an earlier almost identical view of the town with amphitheatre contained in Vincenzo Maria Coronelli’s Isolario.

BIERMANN, F.
Biermann, F, worked in the second half of the 19th century. In 1875, he edited his graphic map containing town views of Istrian and Dalmatian towns that was published by Austrian Lloyd. Biermann’s views are esteemed for their artistic value, but as the author had never personally seen the towns whose views he depicted, except for their artistry Biermann’s views have no documentary value.
