RIEGEL, CHRISTOPH: VIEW OF VARAŽDIN

This view of Varaždin comes from the work «Das Ehemals gedrückte von Turken» published in Frankfurt and Leipzig 1688 based on earlier examples. Martin Stier, a Habsburg topographer, made very similar view in 1660. This Riegel’s view shows the town of Varaždin within its walls, built during the period of wars against the Turks. Bell-towers of single churches are the only that stand above the town’s contours. The author was focused on the representation of the town’s defence system what is understandable considering the war atmosphere at the time the map was created.
