WERNIGK, FREDERICH: VIEW OF ZAGREB

Inventory number 238
Original title: Agram
Publishing year: 1845
Place of publishing and publisher: Wien
Format: 21 x 43 cm
Technique: Litograph

This view dating from around 1845 was modelled upon an earlier view printed in 1845 by the Viennese drawer and engraver Anton Bogner. This lithographic issue of Bogner’s view was printed by Wernigk. The view shows Zagreb seen from the southern side. On the left hand (western) hill the Upper town with St. Mark’s church can be seen and on the right hand (eastern) hill the Episcopal Zagreb (Kaptol) is shown with the Cathedral dedicated to St. Stephen. Between them at foothill the future business-commercial centre of Zagreb, Lower town starting to grow is identified. South from Ilica, today densely built urban area, there were still laying meadows and pasture-grounds. The view does not feature an entirely accurate representation of Zagreb at the time, especially as regards Ilica, Vlaška and Petrinjska roads whose houses are shown arbitrarily and schematically.
